7 signs you’re waiting to live instead of truly living

How often do we find ourselves stuck in the rut of day-to-day routine, caught up in the rush of work, responsibilities, and societal expectations? We’re constantly told to ‘man up’, to be strong, to suck it up for some better future that’s just around the corner.

But are we truly living or merely waiting to live?

This article aims to shed light on some signs that indicate you might be stuck in the waiting room of life, instead of actively participating in it. Recognizing these signs and understanding how to break free from this self-imposed limbo is crucial.

Life is happening right now, and it’s high time we start living it.

1) You’re always planning for ‘someday’

“The fool, with all his other faults, has this also, – he is always getting ready to live” -Epicurus (Ad Lucilium Epistulae Morales,1917)

Be honest with yourself. How often do you find yourself daydreaming about a future where everything falls into place perfectly? You know, that elusive ‘someday’ when you’ll finally start that business, take that trip, or even just spend more time doing what you love?

It’s easy to fall into the trap of constantly planning for a future that never seems to arrive. But here’s the question: If you’re always waiting for ‘someday’, aren’t you missing out on today?

2) You’re not taking risks

Let me tell you a little story. A few years ago, I was offered a job that was a significant step up from my current position. It was a golden opportunity, but it also meant moving to a new city and stepping way out of my comfort zone.

I was scared, hesitant even. But I realized that if I let fear dictate my decisions, I’d be forever stuck in the waiting room of life.

Are you playing it too safe? Are you avoiding opportunities because they seem too risky or uncomfortable?

Growth happens outside of your comfort zone. If you’re not taking risks because you’re afraid of the outcome, you’re probably holding yourself back from truly living.

3) You’re not present

Steve Jobs once said, “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.”

How very Stoic of him! It’s a stark reminder of the importance of living in the present.

Think about your daily life. Are you constantly distracted, your mind wandering to yesterday’s problems or tomorrow’s tasks? Are you always reaching for your phone, checking social media or emails?

Living is about experiencing each moment as it comes, not being held hostage by your past or anxiously awaiting the future. If Jobs’ words resonate with you, it might be time to re-evaluate how present you are in your own life.

4) You’re constantly chasing happiness

Picture this: You’re convinced that you’ll be truly happy when you get that promotion, buy that house, or start a family. But once you achieve these goals, the happiness they bring is fleeting, and you’re already looking for the next thing to pursue.

Here’s the harsh truth: If your happiness always lies in the future, you’re not living in the present.

Happiness is not a destination, it’s a journey. It’s found in the small moments and simple pleasures of everyday life – a good book, a shared laugh with a friend, a walk in the park. If you’re always chasing happiness, you’re missing out on the joy of now, and you probably always will be.

Stop waiting for happiness and start embracing it in your everyday life.

5) You’re not prioritizing personal growth

When was the last time you learned something new?

Personal growth is one of the most fulfilling aspects of life, but it’s often overlooked in the rush of our daily routines. If you’re not making time for self-improvement or new experiences, you’re likely stuck in the waiting room of life.

Personal growth can come in many forms – picking up a new skill, reading a thought-provoking book, attending a workshop, or even engaging in deep conversations. These experiences enrich our lives and expand our perspectives.

If you’re not actively prioritizing personal growth, you’re missing out on an essential part of truly living.

6) You’re constantly comparing yourself to others

In today’s digital age, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing your life to the highlight reels of others on social media. If you find yourself constantly measuring your success, appearance, or lifestyle against others, it’s a surefire sign you’re waiting to live.

Comparison is the thief of joy and a waste of time and energy.

As Marcus Aurelius noted, “How great a rest from labour he gains who does not look to what his neighbour says or does or thinks but only what himeslf is doing” – Marcus Aurelius (The Meditations of the Emperor Marcus Antoninus, 1944)

Give yourself that rest. Your journey is unique to you; it can’t and shouldn’t be measured against someone else’s. Instead of comparing, focus on your own growth and happiness.

This is your life. Live it at your own pace, on your own terms.

7) You’re not valuing your relationships

Research shows that one of the most significant contributors to our happiness is the quality of our relationships. Yet, how often do we take them for granted? Are you spending quality time with your loved ones, or are they being pushed aside for work, obligations, or even your own self-interests?

If you’re not nurturing your relationships, you’re missing out on one of the most enriching parts of life. Connections with others bring joy, support, understanding, and a sense of belonging – all crucial elements of a fulfilling life.

Make time for those who matter.

The bottom line

Life isn’t about waiting for the perfect moment, it’s about seizing the moment and making it perfect. If you recognize any of these signs in your own life, it’s time to stop waiting and start living. Remember, your life is unique, and it’s happening right now. Don’t waste it on ‘someday’.
