1) “I’m a failure”

Failing isn’t the issue. Everyone fails – it’s a part of life. The problem lies in believing that you’re a failure.
This thought pattern leads to self-doubt and discourages us from trying new things or taking risks. It makes us feel stuck, unable to move forward, and certainly not resilient.
If you truly want to be more resilient, you need to replace this thought with a more empowering belief: “I learn from my failures.”
Each failure is just another stepping stone on your path to success. It’s not indicative of your worth or capabilities.
2) “I can’t handle this”
Another thought that can sabotage our resilience is the belief that we can’t handle the challenges we’re facing. I learnt this lesson the hard way.
A few years ago, I was going through a very tough time. I had lost my job and was struggling to find another. The bills were piling up, and I felt like I was sinking under the weight of my problems. “I can’t handle this,” was a thought that constantly echoed in my mind.
Then, one day, a friend said something that changed my perspective. She told me, “You’re stronger than you think. You’ve faced difficulties before, and you’ve overcome them.”
And she was right. I had overcome challenges before. This was just another hurdle.
Soon after, I started to replace “I can’t handle this” with “I’ve handled challenges before; I can handle this too.” This simple shift in thinking made a world of difference.
I found strength I didn’t know I had. And though it took some time, I managed to navigate through that tough phase.
The point?
You’re stronger than you think. You’ve faced difficulties before, and you can face them again. Instead of saying, “I can’t handle this,” say, “I’ve handled challenges before, I can handle this too.”
3) “It must be perfect”
Perfectionism can be a huge roadblock to resilience. The pursuit of perfection can lead to unrealistic expectations, chronic stress, and a fear of failure.
The truth is, no one is perfect. Mistakes and flaws are part of being human. Instead of striving for perfection, strive for progression. Aim to be a little better each day, and remember that it’s okay to make mistakes – they’re opportunities for learning and growth.
4) “I’m not good enough”
This thought can be a major roadblock to resilience. The belief that we’re not good enough can hinder our progress, stop us from taking risks, and make us feel inadequate no matter how much we accomplish.
It’s important to remember that everyone has strengths and weaknesses. It’s okay to be a work in progress. Instead of focusing on what you’re not, focus on who you could become.
Nurture a growth mindset. Believe that you can improve, learn, and grow.
5) “It’s too late”
This is a big one.
We often convince ourselves that it’s too late to make changes or pursue our dreams. This thought can be paralyzing, making us feel stuck and hindering our resilience.
But the truth is, it’s never too late to make a positive change in your life. It’s never too late to learn a new skill, start a new project, or even change your career path.
Every day is a new opportunity to start fresh.
6) “People will think…”
Worrying about what others think can be a significant barrier to resilience. The fear of judgment or criticism from others can prevent us from taking risks, trying new things, and pursuing our true passions. It can lead to a life of playing it safe, keeping us in our comfort zones, and stifling our growth.
People are almost always more focused on their own lives and struggles than on judging yours. Moreover, their opinions are just that—opinions. They don’t define you or determine your worth.
Instead of letting the fear of what others might think hold you back, shift your focus inward. Ask yourself what you want, what makes you happy, and what aligns with your values and goals. Remember, living a life true to yourself is far more fulfilling than living one designed to please others.
7) “I should be further along by now”
This thought is a trap that can lead to feelings of inadequacy and failure. It’s easy to fall into the comparison game, where we measure our progress against others, or against societal expectations.
But life isn’t a race. Everyone’s journey is different, with unique timelines, milestones, and paths. What matters is not where you “should” be, but where you are right now, and the progress you’re making.
Instead of thinking “I should be further along by now”, try shifting your perspective to “I am exactly where I need to be”. Celebrate your progress, no matter how small it may seem.
