5 signs you’re letting fear dictate your decisions (and it’s holding you back)

Letting fear dictate your life is like being a passenger in your own car, allowing fear to take the wheel. It hinders your growth, stifles your potential, and keeps you from achieving greatness.

In this article, we will identify five key signs that fear is steering your life and holding you back.

Remember, acknowledging the problem is the first step toward regaining control. So buckle up, and let’s navigate this journey together.

1) You’re always anticipating the worst

Have you ever found yourself always expecting the worst possible outcome, no matter how unlikely?

This is a common sign that fear is dictating your life. It’s like you’re living in a constant state of ‘what if,’ where every decision or choice is shadowed by a looming catastrophe.

It’s natural to be mindful of risks and potential downsides. Even Stoics like Seneca were proponents of negative visualization. However, he also famously wrote, “There are more things, Lucilius, likely to frighten us than there are to crush us; we suffer more often in imagination than in reality” (Moral letters to Lucilius/Letter 13)

When your caution turns into crippling pessimism, it can hold you back from taking essential steps forward.

Life carries inherent risks. If we let fear of the worst-case scenario guide all our decisions, we’ll miss out on opportunities for growth and positive change.

2) You avoid new experiences

I still remember how I used to turn down every opportunity to try something new.

It could be as trivial as tasting a different cuisine or as significant as moving to a new city. I found comfort in the familiar and the known. Taking a leap into the unknown felt like jumping off a cliff without a safety net.

What I didn’t realize then was that my fear of new experiences was keeping me stuck in a rut. I was missing out on growth, learning, and the thrill of discovery.

It wasn’t until I forced myself to step out of my comfort zone that I began to see the value in new experiences. They weren’t as terrifying as I had imagined. In fact, they were enriching my life.

If you also find yourself always sticking to what’s familiar and avoiding new experiences, it might be a sign that fear is holding you back. Face it head-on and embrace the unfamiliar; you never know what incredible journey it might lead you on.

3) You feel paralyzed by indecision

Are you frequently stuck at crossroads, unable to decide which way to go? Fear can often leave us feeling paralyzed, preventing us from making decisions and taking action.

When fear is in control, it blows the consequences of a wrong decision out of proportion, making every choice seem like a potential disaster.

The solution? Well, according to legendary investor Ray Dalio, it’s to fail well. In his bestselling book Principles, he writes:

“Fail well. Everyone fails. Anyone you see succeeding is only succeeding at the things you’re paying attention to. I guarantee they are also failing at lots of other things.”

It’s okay to make mistakes. In fact, they are essential for learning and growth.

4) You keep postponing your dreams

I’ve always had a dream to write a book. But for the longest time, I kept putting it off. There was always an excuse — I was too busy, I didn’t have enough ideas, or the timing wasn’t right.

In reality, it was fear that was holding me back. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, and even fear of success. It was easier to keep that dream on the horizon than face the possibility of it not turning out the way I hoped.

Have I finished the book? No, but I have faced the fear of starting it. It’s a work in progress. Stay tuned!

Back to you. Do you find yourself constantly postponing your dreams or goals?  Take a moment to reflect. Are you genuinely too busy? Or is it fear that’s causing you to delay?

Recognizing that fear might be the real obstacle is the first step towards overcoming it and finally pursuing your dreams.

5) You’re overly self-critical

Don’t be disgusted, don’t give up, don’t be impatient if you do not carry out entirely conduct based in every detail upon right principles; but after a fall return again,” Marcus Aurelius (The Meditations of the Emperor Marcus Antoninus, 1944)

Being overly self-critical is often a sign that fear has a stronghold over your life. When fear is in control, it magnifies our mistakes and flaws, leading us to believe that we are not good enough or capable enough.

This constant self-criticism can be debilitating. It can prevent us from trying new things, taking risks, or pursuing our dreams for fear of not being perfect.

If you find yourself trapped in a loop of self-criticism, it’s crucial to realize that nobody is perfect. We all have strengths and weaknesses, and it’s okay to make mistakes. Instead of letting fear fuel your self-criticism, use it as a stepping stone to learn, grow and become stronger.

The bottom line

The human mind is a labyrinth of emotions and thoughts, each impacting our decisions, actions, and ultimately, our lives. Fear is one such emotion that can shape our perspective if left unchecked.

Consider the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt, who famously said, “The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” This statement holds profound truth. Fear, in essence, is an emotional response to perceived threats. It’s not the actual danger but our perception of it that holds us back.

If you recognize these signs in your life, know that you’re not alone. Many of us grapple with fear in its various forms. But realization is the first step towards change.

Reflect on these signs and understand how fear might be dictating your life. The challenge lies in shifting your perspective from fear-based to one of courage and resilience.

It’s a journey that requires patience and self-compassion but promises a future where fear no longer holds you back, but propels you forward.
